This course examines a remarkable episode in modern history: the attempt to determine whether human consciousness could acquire useful information about distant or concealed targets—and how that search compares with artificial intelligence.
Remote viewing is a structured attempt to describe a target that is hidden from the participant and unavailable through ordinary sensory contact.
A target might be a location, photograph, object, or event. A target coordinator selects it, gives it a neutral identifier, and keeps its identity concealed. The viewer records spontaneous impressions—such as bright, cold, curved, metallic, open, moving, or echoing—before receiving feedback.
The word viewing can be misleading. Participants may report textures, sounds, temperatures, motion, spatial relationships, feelings, or sketches rather than a movie-like mental picture. A session is most useful as an experiment when the target is selected in advance, information leakage is prevented, and the response is preserved before feedback.

Which feature is essential to a meaningful remote-viewing test?
The 1950s supplied the political and scientific background, but the public record does not show a formal U.S. remote-viewing program operating throughout that decade.
After World War II, U.S. intelligence agencies feared that adversaries might develop new interrogation, propaganda, psychological, or behavioral techniques. Programs including BLUEBIRD, ARTICHOKE, and MKULTRA examined subjects such as hypnosis, drugs, interrogation, and behavior modification. These programs are historically important, but they were not the same as the later remote-viewing effort.
Outside intelligence agencies, parapsychologists continued laboratory work on extrasensory perception, telepathy, clairvoyance, and card-guessing. Such research helped preserve the larger question: could information be acquired through a channel not recognized by conventional science?
In 1955, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon proposed a summer study of “artificial intelligence.” The 1956 Dartmouth gathering is widely treated as the field’s founding event. Its bold premise was that aspects of learning and intelligence might be described precisely enough for machines to simulate them.

Which statement is best supported by the historical record?
During the 1960s, American defense research pursued computer intelligence while intelligence analysts monitored reports of Soviet and Eastern European parapsychology.
Western observers reported Soviet and Czechoslovak interest in telepathy, psychokinesis, hypnosis, unusual human performance, and “psychotronics.” The quality and military value of that work were uncertain. Nevertheless, Cold War planners had a powerful reason to investigate: they feared ignoring a capability that an adversary might possess.
This is a recurring intelligence problem. Agencies sometimes explore low-probability ideas because the consequences of being surprised could be serious. Investigation therefore proves interest—not success.
ARPA’s Information Processing Techniques Office expanded support for computing and AI. Work included human-computer interaction, symbolic reasoning, language, planning, and robotics. At Stanford Research Institute, the Shakey robot project combined cameras, sensors, maps, and planning software. It could “perceive” a limited environment because instruments supplied data to a computer.
There is no credible public documentation showing that 1960s AI secretly powered psychic perception or that early computers could access unknown distant events without data. The strongest connection is historical: Cold War agencies funded unconventional approaches to intelligence and decision-making.

The documented U.S. remote-viewing story takes recognizable form in 1972 at Stanford Research Institute.
Physicists Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ conducted experiments with individuals including artist Ingo Swann and former police commissioner Pat Price. CIA sponsorship supported early work. The neutral phrase “remote viewing” helped distinguish a controlled procedure from the broader language of clairvoyance.
In a typical experiment, a participant attempted to describe a location or target unknown to them. Some trials used an outbound person at a randomly chosen location. Others used coordinates, photographs, or designated sites. Responses could include sketches and sensory descriptors. Researchers compared those responses with the target after the session.
Ingo Swann helped develop structured descriptive methods and emphasized recording basic impressions before interpretation. Pat Price became known for detailed location descriptions. Puthoff and Targ argued that some results deserved scientific attention. Critics challenged experimental controls, judging procedures, sensory leakage, selective reporting, and repeatability.
When reviewing a session report, identify: the date, target-selection method, who knew the target, when feedback was given, the original response, the scoring method, and any opportunity for information leakage.
Why is the year 1972 important in this history?
“STAR GATE” is commonly used as an umbrella name, but the work moved among agencies and code names over more than two decades.

Statistician Jessica Utts argued that some laboratory results provided evidence of anomalous cognition. Psychologist Ray Hyman argued that methodological problems and the need for independent replication prevented that conclusion. The operational review found that the produced information was often vague, inconsistent, and difficult to use without substantial interpretation.
A fair course does not erase either side. Statistical deviation from chance, if present, is not automatically the same as a reliable intelligence tool. A method used in national security must deliver specific, timely, independently verifiable information with a manageable error rate.

What was a central conclusion of the 1995 operational review?
Before proposing an unknown information channel, we must understand how ordinary perception and memory can create powerful experiences.
Perception combines incoming signals with expectations, past experience, attention, and prediction. This is normally useful: incomplete sensory information becomes a workable picture of the world. But the same process can produce false certainty when information is sparse.
Remote-viewing practitioners use the term analytical overlay, or AOL, for the mind’s attempt to name a target too quickly. A flash of “cold, white, open, high” may become “snowy mountain.” Once that label appears, imagination may add trees, skiers, and a cabin. The disciplined response is to write “AOL: snowy mountain,” release it, and return to basic descriptors.
For two minutes, observe an ordinary object. Record only color, geometry, texture, weight, temperature, sound, and spatial relationships. Do not name the object in your notes.
What is analytical overlay?
A dramatic impression proves little without a protocol that prevents ordinary information from reaching the viewer.
Settle: breathe slowly and release expectations. Begin: write the target ID, date, and time. Probe: record immediate lines, textures, temperatures, colors, sounds, dimensions, movement, and ambience. Sketch: show relationships without trying to make art. Separate: label interpretations as AOL. Close: sign and save the response before feedback.
Write how you would keep a target concealed from both viewer and monitor while preserving an independent answer key.
Which design most strongly limits cueing?
Use the built-in target generator for practice. For stronger testing, ask a second person to create a larger independent target pool outside this page.
Take 5–10 minutes. Record raw impressions before revealing the target.

A high self-score can be informative, but independent judging against decoys is stronger. Do not rewrite notes after feedback. Record misses with the same care as hits.
Complete at least three sessions. For each, record the target code, start time, end time, emotional state, raw data, AOL, score, and what you would improve.
When should a viewer receive feedback?
The question is not whether a response contains any resemblance. With enough general words, almost every response will match something. The question is whether it matches the correct target better than suitable alternatives.
Suppose a response says “large, open, blue, moving, bright.” After seeing an ocean photograph, the description may feel impressive. But it might fit a waterfall, swimming pool, blue stadium, or glass building. A blind judge should compare the response with several targets before learning which one is correct.
One striking session may be memorable but cannot establish reliability. Look across many preplanned trials. Preserve failures, avoid changing procedures after seeing results, and report how targets, viewers, and sessions were selected. Independent replication is especially valuable.

Create four very different photographs. Have a partner write a concealed-target response. Shuffle the photographs and rank them without knowing the answer. Record your ranking before revelation.
What is the main purpose of decoy targets?
AI can create a technological form of distant perception, but it does so by processing information supplied through data and sensors.
Researchers proposed that learning, reasoning, language, and problem solving could be represented in machines. The term artificial intelligence became established after the Dartmouth project.
Programs followed human-written rules and symbolic representations. Government-supported research explored planning, robotics, language, and human-computer cooperation.
Instead of receiving every rule from a programmer, systems learned statistical patterns from examples. Modern deep learning dramatically expanded image, speech, and language processing.
When the data source is invisible to the audience, AI output can look mysterious. But the system is still using a channel: training data, prompts, tools, metadata, or sensors. If a supposedly blind AI experiment leaks a filename, location tag, image signature, or prior target list, the AI may exploit it without the researcher realizing.
List every information channel an AI might use in a “remote target” test: prompt wording, filenames, metadata, prior examples, network access, tools, training data, and evaluator feedback.
What allows AI to analyze a distant location?
The valuable comparison concerns information, uncertainty, interpretation, and error—not a claim that machines are psychic.

Both fields developed within a national-security environment interested in gaining an information advantage. Early AI sought to amplify reasoning, planning, recognition, and control. Remote-viewing research asked whether trained human consciousness could supply information when normal collection methods were blocked. The government funded both kinds of work, but the available record does not demonstrate that they shared a mechanism.
AI can help generate neutral target codes, randomize target order, remove identifying language, organize session records, and calculate consistent scores. It can also compare a response with multiple candidate descriptions. However, the AI must be isolated from the answer until its judgment is locked.
What is the most defensible connection between remote viewing and AI?
A responsible course ends where responsible practice begins: humility, consent, privacy, documentation, and respect for evidence.
Design and complete a five-trial mini-study. Use at least 20 possible targets, random selection, a viewer blind to the targets, preserved responses, four or more candidates per judging round, and an independent judge. State your method before beginning.
